Sifnos, one of the richest in folk tradition, history and color of all the Cyclade’s island, is offered for those who are not simply enough in golden sandy beaches.
The traditional villages with the distinctive Cycladic white color, the blooming flower beds, the stone windmills and the blue domes of countless small chapels that are scattered throughout the island, create the perfect holiday setting.
You will find it all on this island. Sifnos has trails in the mountains, stunning sunsets behind hills, beautiful beaches and steep cliffs.
The old capital of Sifnos is a real Castle, a characteristic example of Venetian architecture, with its atmospheric cobbled streets sprouting through the walls. The sea view from the back of the village is stunning, with or without sunset.
Evenings in Sifnos begin and end at the small alleys in Apollonia, the country of the island. Walking through the paved streets, you can buy souvenirs, taste the traditional dishes and enjoy a drink. Don’t forget to taste the local food as well as more special dishes influenced by international cuisine in restaurants that exist in the alleys. Enjoy one or more drinks in scenic bars and cafes that you will find open until the first morning hours, as here, in the famous “Steno” of Apollonia, beats the heart of the nightlife of Sifnos.
Although Kamares is the beach opposite the port, it is very clear and large enough to fit everyone. Lying in the sand and staring around the port is excellent. And if you ask for more fun, you will hear music and see a lot of people having fun at the two beach bars on the beach.
Don’t leave Sifnos unless you take a stroll through the most beautiful area of the island, with imposing mansions and the sophisticated atmosphere, Artemonas. Stop and see these neoclassical houses that look like palaces, smell the bougainvilleas and taste sweet flavors to the most wonderful pastry shop in the village. Do not leave Artemonas unless you buy local cookies with anise!
Perhaps the most photographed image of Sifnos, the chapel of Chrysopigi on the edge of the rock that looks like a boat sailing in the sea, is also a favorite spot for diving in the crystal clear waters just below. Following the carriageway towards Platis Gialos, at the south side of Sifnos, and making a left turn at the last crossing before Platis Gialos, the visitor sets eyes on one of the most beautiful and famous images all over the world, the sacred rock of Chrissopigi.
The sacred rock with the snowy-white building, the almost absent vegetation, the vastity of the Aegean Sea and the peaceful magnificence of the space, compose a lovely environment, a real optical pleasure for the one who faces it.
At the left side of Chrissopigi, there is the picturesque gulf of Apokofto, with its clean emerald waters.
Before becoming a book, Nicholas Tselementes was an amazing Greek cook who was born and lived in Sifnos.
